Which Glass for a Splashback?
Not all glass works as a splashback. Here are the main options we offer, with guidance on which suits your kitchen or bathroom.
Toughened Clear Glass
The most popular splashback choice. Toughened (tempered) glass is up to 5× stronger than standard float glass and is heat-safe behind cooktops. Available from 6mm to 12mm. Recommended for kitchen splashbacks behind stoves.
Ultra-Clear (Low-Iron) Glass
Standard clear glass has a slight green tint. Ultra-clear glass has reduced iron content, giving a perfectly neutral, crystal-clear appearance — ideal when you want to see true paint colours or stone textures behind the glass.
Toughened Mirror Splashback
Temperable (toughenable) mirror glass can be heat-treated for safe use as a splashback. Silver, grey, and bronze finishes available. Creates a dramatic, light-expanding effect in kitchens and wet areas.
Matelux / Acid-Etched Glass
A frosted, satin finish on one side. Acid-etched glass softens light and adds texture while remaining easy to clean. Can be toughened. Popular in bathroom splashback applications.
Splashback Glass Thickness Guide
Choosing the right thickness depends on your installation type and the span of unsupported glass.
| Thickness | Common Use | Toughenable | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6mm | Standard kitchen & bathroom splashback | ✓ Yes | Most common splashback thickness. Suitable for most residential applications. |
| 10mm | Large spans, frameless applications | ✓ Yes | Heavier and more rigid — suits wide splashbacks or where glass is mechanically fixed. |
| 12mm | Structural / feature panels | ✓ Yes | Premium feel. Used for large feature walls or frameless installations. |
| 4–5mm | Light-duty / decorative only | ✓ Yes (4–5mm) | Suitable only for low-heat areas — not recommended behind cooktops. |
Toughened glass is required behind all gas and electric cooktops under AS1288. We supply pre-toughened glass — holes or cutouts must be specified at ordering time and cannot be cut after toughening.

Edge Polishing Options
Exposed edges on a splashback should be polished for safety and a professional finish. We offer three options.
Flat Polish (Arrised)
A smooth, slightly bevelled edge — the most common choice for splashbacks that will be silicone-sealed against a wall. Clean and understated.
Mitre Edge
A 45-degree chamfer cut at the edge — creates a sleek, modern look for glass-to-glass joins or where the edge will be visible.
Bevel Edge
A wider, angled grind that catches the light. Popular for decorative mirror splashbacks where the edge is a design feature.
Splashback Glass FAQs
Yes — any glass within 500mm of a cooktop heat source must comply with AS1288 and be toughened safety glass. We supply toughened glass as standard for splashback orders. If your splashback is in a low-heat area (e.g. behind a bathroom basin with no stove nearby), standard cut-to-size glass may be suitable — but toughened is still recommended for any fixed installation.
Yes. Add holes or cutouts when placing your order — specify the size and location of each cutout. Important: holes must be specified before toughening, as toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after the fact. We confirm all cutout dimensions with you before production.
Standard clear glass has a slight green tint, most visible on the edge. Ultra-clear glass has reduced iron content, eliminating the green cast. You'll benefit from ultra-clear if you're painting the wall behind the glass (to show the true colour) or if you want a high-end, crystal-clear appearance. It costs more than standard clear but the visual difference is significant in bright kitchens.
Measure the width and height of your splashback area in millimetres. If measuring between benchtops and overhead cabinets, measure the finished gap and subtract 3–5mm on each edge for silicone clearance. Our full glass measuring guide covers splashbacks, including how to handle power outlet locations.
